The Body Remembers
With t1 diabetes, the body has no ability nor memory of how to respond to the changes of everyday living—literally every change must be triaged and managed quite manually to compensate for a dysfunctional, core bodily function. As a result of 25 years of this (as of today!), I have millions of learned experiences where my body has helplessly relied on me, so I tend to assume the same about it when it comes to sport and movement—and yet, it remembers.
It remembers the hip circles and ankle flexions to put on silk foot locks, the twist of the wrist to grab a fabric pole to swirl around it, and the hook of the knee to balance you in place. It still knows how to speak this language after nearly a year away from training. Body, maybe you’re not such a let down after all! 😊
Special shout-out to @jazzybelle_llb , @heelhang , and @shannon.mckenna.aerial for setting the stage, and inviting me so gently and creatively back to the air again at the 2023 Supernatural Vertical Retreat in Bisbee, AZ.
